STOP USING THE BOOK OF ENOCH TO INTERPRET GENESIS 6
Whenever people argue that Genesis 6 is about angels marrying human women, one of the first sources they quote is the Book of Enoch. Even those who openly admit the Book of Enoch is not inspired often turn around and exalt it as if it were Scripture, using it to define Genesis 6. But the truth is simple: the Book of Enoch is not inspired, not authoritative, and not even reliable as commentary. It is mythology, folklore, and fable—and Scripture warns us against such writings.
Paul’s Warnings About Fables
The Apostle Paul repeatedly urged believers to avoid fables and myths, because they twist the truth and breed confusion:
“Not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men, that turn from the truth.” (Titus 1:13-14)
“Neither give heed to fables and endless genealogies, which minister questions, rather than godly edifying which is in faith.” (1 Timothy 1:4)
“But refuse profane and old wives' fables, and exercise thyself rather unto godliness.” (1 Timothy 4:7)
“Hold fast the form of sound words…” (2 Timothy 1:13)
“Evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived. But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned… and that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.” (2 Timothy 3:13-15)
Paul calls us to hold firmly to Scripture alone—not to legends or later inventions. By that standard, the Book of Enoch is not “sound words” and offers no godly benefit.
The Book of Enoch vs. God’s Word
Genesis 6 already explains what happened before the flood. Adding the Book of Enoch to interpret it does not clarify—it changes the narrative. Where Scripture describes godly men mingling with the ungodly, Enoch introduces angelic myths borrowed from pagan thinking. Instead of supporting the Bible, it introduces error and confusion.
God gave us all we need in His Word. We do not need Jewish fables to “fill gaps” or answer curiosities. The Bible is sufficient, and the Book of Enoch only leads away from truth.
Genesis 6 must be explained by Scripture, not by folklore. Christians should heed Paul’s warnings: reject myths like Enoch, stand on the Word of God, and let the Bible interpret the Bible.
