 By Rev. James Garton Someone read our Book of Enoch Debunked article and wrote in to ask how we came up with the 4,500-foot height of the giants found in 1 Enoch 7:2. In the R.H. Charles version, it says, "And they [the wives of the Watchers] became pregnant, and they bare great giants, whose height was three thousand ells:" 1 Enoch 7:2 So, the height of the giants was 3,000 ells, but what is an ell? The reader shared with us a video of a person who claimed the ell was a measurement of 45 inches, which put the height of the giants at well over 11,000 feet (3000 ells x 45"). However, that height is wrong. The individual in the video was using the modern ell length that was standardized for the garment industry (45"). However, the original ell was not 45 inches. The ell is associated with the arm and started as a cubit measurement (elbow to fingertip). [1] So, the 4,500 feet in our article is the ancient cubit (about 18 inches) x 3000 divided by 12 inches (1 foot) to equal 4,500 feet. [2] It must be emphasized that our measurement of 4500 feet is not based on the R.H. Charles translation of 1 Enoch alone. Several sources were consulted like the Codex Panopolitanus and the opinion of scholars on 4Q201. Only after we had a consensus of 3,000 cubits from multiple sources did we utilized that measurement to calculate the height into feet for our article. Nevertheless, no matter if the height of the giants were 450 feet (Laurence), 4500 feet (3000 cubits), or 11,000 + feet (45" ell), those sizes are not physiologically possible for the human body to survive.
